“That was so great!” Lauren gushes over the video call.

It’s the day after our Louvre adventure, and we’re sitting together at the desk in Allison’s suite, sharing her laptop. I can’t remember ever having a conversation with Lauren where she actually sounded pleased about something I’d done. She looks a lot friendlier with a smile on her face. Less scary.

“You guys had over twenty thousand people tune in for that livestream at its highest point. That’s incredible! So much engagement, so much participation. And Barron’s gained three thousand followers in just one day!”

“Sorry,” Allison says nonchalantly, “I know we did go a little off-script…”

She even has a cool, confident way of apologizing, I think.

It’s not that she doesn’t sound genuine about it. But her tone of voice implies that she knows Lauren will still like and respect her, even after doing something she technically wasn’t supposed to.

“…I just thought Barron was doing so well with the audience, and he came up with such a good idea right there in the moment it seemed worth seeing where it went.”

Ooh la la. Rare praise from Allison Ward.

“You made the right call,” Lauren tells her. “Good instincts.”

“I did want to make sure that we checked in with you about all the legal stuff,” Allison continues. “Especially since I think Barron is interested in doing more of these sort of charitable…antics…?”

She looks over at me for confirmation.

“I am interested,” I confirm. “If the professionals in the room think it’s a good idea, of course.”

“It is,” Allison says.

She sounds tentatively confident about it, but also like she wants to think through the idea before committing.

“A lot of formerly controversial influencers have gone in that direction, actually. Like Ritchie Connor, that guy who got millions of followers doing dumb prank videos. He got into hot water a while back and had to change his image.

“Now he does ‘kind pranks,’ where he surprises his followers and gives them cars and cash and stuff. People definitely responded to it.

“But we do need to be careful. We don’t want to come off as disingenuous. I think it played well yesterday because it seemed so spontaneous. Just another wacky whim that popped into Barron’s head. It didn’t seem like he was doing it to try to make himself look good.”

She pauses, considering.

“But,” she continues. “If we keep doing stuff like that we will have to be a little more thoughtful about it. To make sure we’re legally in the clear if nothing else. So we won’t have that spontaneous angle on our side forever.”

She flicks her eyes over to me, studying me.

“What do you think, Barron? Do you think you can pull off ’thoughtful’?”

“I am extremely thoughtful, Allison,” I say, speaking slowly, and in a way that I hope conveys that I am taking extreme care over all of my thoughts. “I’m a profound, sensitive thinker. Sometimes I just sit quietly in a corner and ponder. Deeply. Like this.”

I put my hand to my chin and look far off into the distance.
